The Complex

the-complex-titleThe Complex really just took a bunch of elements from multiple genres, psychological mystery, drama, horror, and anything else you can think of and tossed them in together. This is rarely a recipe for a good movie and The Complex is no exception. Slow moving, a 50 minute first act is just a bit much, too many main story lines and long drawn out scenes for no reason all contribute to making this not a scary movie. It is interesting in some regards as you want to know how the stories conclude, but once they do you’ll probably wish it had been left a mystery. I wish I could say better of it, but The Complex is probably not worth watching unless you enjoy Japanese horror movies a lot, horror movies in general a lot, or if you’re curious how I could write this much about a movie I really didn’t like all that well. – 2.9/5 (genre)

The Silenced

the-silenced-titleThe Silenced is a complex horror/suspense/drama that unfolds in one of the more unique ways I’ve seen in a long time. It interlaces multiple story threads, much like the threads in the quilt that the girls of the school were making; lot’s of rising and falling of different stories that collide with each other at some point in the movie, forming the final tapestry we see in the end. If you can avoid being off put by this, and the extreme hamming it up of the adult actors, you’ll find a beautiful acted (the girls), deeply moving, and unique retelling of a story we’ve seen before, but which feels completely fresh and new. There are some great horror-type scenes, but the friendship between Ju-ran and Yeon-deok is by far the most compelling aspect of the movie, and the final minutes with these two make the entire movie worth watching. – 4/5 (genre) Continue reading

Perfect Sisters

Perfect Sisters Title“The greatest strength of Perfect Sisters is not that it is the perfect movie, but that it is all about how the movie makes the viewer feel rather than the actual events unfolding…This is the perfection in Perfect Sisters, there may be many parts that fall just a little flat, or a bit odd at times, but it is the introspective aspect that [makes it work]. It is truly unique in it’s ability to act as a mirror and make you take a deep look at yourself, however uncomfortable that prospect may be.” – 3.6/5 (genre)

The Sisterhood of Night

The Sisterhood of Night Title“If Anguish was the movie that made me jump, The Sisterhood of Night is the movie that made me cry. By time I had reached the last 20 minutes in the movie I was in love with all the characters. The narrative let me understand what they were going through, not on an intellectual level, but on an emotional one. It let me see the world through the eyes of young women who were lost and alone and just needed a safe place, needed someones ‘vow of silence’. ” – 4.3/5 (general) Continue reading

Anguish

Anguish Title“Anguish is the horror movie that finally made me jump! While it was small, and it made my cat jump more than me, it finally succeeded where others had failed. And it did this without blood, gore, demons, (movie) witchcraft or even the “hey lets do it because it’s shocking” that has become quite popular. It just took me by surprise, and I love it for that. Watch Anguish with high expectations and you won’t be let down; watch it with low expectations and you’ll be extraordinarily happy.” – 4.31/5 (genre) Continue reading
