The Ring

the-ring-titleThe Ring was the key horror movie that revived a genre, but was also a personal revival in my interest in the horror genre. It was steadily paced, suspenseful, and had a well crafted story that kept you intrigued all throughout. The ending was unique for the time and still holds one of the best final moment scenes of any horror movie I’ve watched. If asked to choose my all time favorite horror movie The Ring would be a top contender and hard to beat, but there is some competition. With the second sequel Rings coming out soon, if you haven’t seen The Ring watch it. It is a must see movie, and unique for so many reasons. – 4.1/5 (general)

In addition: My quarter century review (#25 that is) will be The Ring Two, the first sequel and my first viewing. Continue reading

The Lazarus Effect

TheLazarusEffect Title“The Lazarus Effect starts out very strong, and maintains a good stride for the first hour with a very interesting topic explored in a very interesting way. But in the last half hour it manages to not only undo all the ideas it has created but to twist them into a simplified, easy to digest ending for us to consume. Surely this makes some comment on what the writers/directors think about their audience, but I might be reading a bit much into it. Definitely worth watching, a lot of fun on both a purely philosophical level as well as a good horror/suspense level, just expect to be disappointed by the turn it takes just past the one hour mark.” – 3.4/5 (genre)

Beneath

Beneath Title“So how did I end up feeling about Beneath? It was solidly acted with excellent use of music and backdrops for ambiance, which contained all the elements necessary to be a good horror/suspense movie. Somehow however, Beneath just never puts those pieces together into anything that takes a meaningful shape, leaving us feeling like we just watched a murder reenactment show on the Discovery channel, only we know these things never happened…I’d say watch it if you like mild horror, mostly suspense type movies, and need a filler on an off night when you normally wouldn’t watch a movie.” – 2.7/5 (genre) Continue reading

Pandemic

Pandemic Title“Pandemic is a shaky roller coaster, FPS style, zombie apocalypse ride. It is a seamless flow from start to finish on what begins as a singular directed story and evolves into something much more emotionally intense. The forced first person perspective is just plain awful, especially when you throw in the more contrived shots to give us a wider perspective. But through all of that there is good solid story about a mother and her daughter, however brief that daughter may appear on screen, which leads us to find greater character depth from our main cast than would be expected for this type of film. Pandemic is solid, and a good watch. Just be aware, it is a zombie movie so there will be blood, lots of blood.” – 3.4/5 (genre)

The Unborn

The Unborn Title“The Unborn is a fairly standard horror movie that doesn’t do a good job of connecting us to it’s characters, or making us feel like we should care. The plot is common place possession/exorcism with a pretty predictable type of ending…Where it succeeds is in the originality of having a possession story not based in Christian mythology, a semi-diverse core cast that isn’t just slaughter fodder, and the monster mash up from other movies. The combination of these things makes The Unborn worth watching even if it isn’t that great a movie overall. The recurring…creepstyx Pit bull wearing a mask will elicit some bad day dreams at the very least. Though I’m sure the Silent Hill and The Grudge type creatures will catch everyone else’s attention.” – 2.5/5 (genre) Continue reading

The Abandoned

“I didThe Abandoned Titlen’t think there was ever a chance I would say this, but I would rather watch The Hollow, a SyFy made for T.V. movie focused on special effects with no thought for writing, acting or directing than The Abandoned. Or for that matter even The Damned. My entire world has been turned upside down. There is no possible way I could have found a more boring, less believable, unoriginal and derogatory movie than The Abandoned. I guess someday I may be saying that about another movie, as I am now, but it boggles my mind to think so.” – 1.2/5 (genre) Continue reading

The Damned

The Damned Title“if you like horror movies about demons, possession and generally just need the T.V. to be on while you do something else then watch The Damned. If you only have two choices and the other one is The Hollow, watch The Damned. Otherwise, I would just steer clear of this movie because it’s basically as much fun as the flash flood that started it all, except less roller coastery.” – 2.3/5 (genre)

Anguish

Anguish Title“Anguish is the horror movie that finally made me jump! While it was small, and it made my cat jump more than me, it finally succeeded where others had failed. And it did this without blood, gore, demons, (movie) witchcraft or even the “hey lets do it because it’s shocking” that has become quite popular. It just took me by surprise, and I love it for that. Watch Anguish with high expectations and you won’t be let down; watch it with low expectations and you’ll be extraordinarily happy.” – 4.31/5 (genre) Continue reading

Neverlake

Neverlake Title“as the overarching story line is simplistic, Neverlake attempts to push depth on us through confusion. The scenes are often disjointed and don’t connect in any meaningful way until much later. To further exacerbate this issue the narration by Jenny partially brings about a tone of importance and significance that is self imbued. It’s as if the movie is proclaiming itself to be of great depth and importance without the consent of the audience.” – 2.9/5 (genre) Continue reading

Hellions

Hellions Title“Hellions is quite often serenely eerie due in no small part to the perfectly timed and abrupt musical changes, and the visually stunning contrast of black and white against pastel colors. Combine this with children in masks who speak a lot like the Borg and I imagine this is the kind of intensity Children of the Corn should have evoked were it not boring me to death instead.” -3.6/5 (genre)
